2nd St. Ives Scout Troop

Boys and Girls 10 ½ to 14 years.
Term time, every Friday

Scouts aims to build and develop young people’s confidence, sense of adventure and outdoor skills, as well as encouraging them to explore their beliefs and attitudes and be creative. It offers them the independence to put these skills into practice at camps and even on international trips.

Scouts are encouraged to work together and take the lead on all sorts of projects, from community based work to planning games and activities for their meetings.

The Scout Troop is the third section in the Scout Group, above Beavers and Cubs. The Scout Section is for young people aged between 10½ and 14 years. There is core flexibility in the age range: young people can join from age 10, and can move to Explorers between age 13½ and 14½. It may sometimes be appropriate to extend this flexibility for young people with additional needs.

We meet on Fridays

Build Confidence, Resilience and a sense of Adventure

Structure

A Scout Troop is divided into small groups called Patrols, each headed up by an older Scout called a Patrol Leader, and often with an Assistant Patrol Leader.

Activities

Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part of their program including traditional Scouting skills, such as camping, survival and cooking, as well as a wider spectrum of adventurous activities, from abseiling to zorbing. Participation rather than meeting set standards is the key approach, and there are a number of badges and awards that Scouts can gain to recognise their achievements.

Uniform

Parents are asked to provide a Sea Scout uniform shirt, Sea Scout hat and navy blue activity trousers (which their child may wear as soon as they have it). These may be purchased from the group or alternatively from any Scout shop. (Suitable alternative trousers are available)

For Troop meetings, uniforms are to be clean and presentable with Scouts wearing polished shoes/boots and dark socks.

The group supplies a neckerchief (Necker) and tally band which should not be worn until they are invested, unless they were previously a Cub Scout.

Group activity clothing (logo’d t-shirt, hoodie and Jacket) are available from the section leaders. On occasion these will replace the official uniform (Necker to still be worn) when activities undertaken are “dirty” or adventurous, alternative footwear on these occasions, may also be requested.

All Scout belongings must be clearly marked with their name so that they may be returned should they go astray.

Promise and Law

To become a member of the Scout Association and our Group, your child will be asked to make a promise at an investiture ceremony. This would normally be undertaken on a section evening; however they can be carried out at any event e.g. at camp.

The Scout Promise
On my honour,
I promise that I will do my best
to do my duty to God and to the Queen,
to help other people
and to keep the Scout Law.

The Scout Law
1. A Scout is to be trusted.
2. A Scout is loyal.
3. A Scout is friendly and considerate.
4. A Scout belongs to the worldwide family of Scouts.
5. A Scout has courage in all difficulties.
6. A Scout makes good use of time and is careful of possessions and property.
7. A Scout has self-respect and respect for others.

Camps, hikes and water adventures are some of the most memorable events of the year for our Scouts.
